PLAY TIME
Here they come, walkin' down the street: Twenty-five theater
critics and writers, all to YOUR play. Such was the scene with
the NEA Institute in Theater and Musical Theater, which
brought together more than two dozen journalists in Los
Angeles. We took a daily acting and movement class, went to a
play or musical almost every night, wrote deadline reviews
critiqued by our peers and met scads of directors, actors and
producers. Oh, and we ate. A lot. Click on the first link below
to begin your photographic journey.
Music of the night
The fellows descend upon
Sasha's house in Pasadena for
an evening of food and musical
theater from Marsha Kramer,
Kim Huber and Jack Viertel.
Maternal combustion
Sandra Tsing Loh keeps the audience
laughing with her account of trying to
find a school for her daughter in L.A.
Afterwards, a chance to meet and
mingle.
Nap time
Even highly motivated theater writers
need to sleep sometime. Janet and Bob
show how it's done.
Henrik maneuvers
The group gets a dose of Ibsen
along with some scene work
from "The Master Builder"
featuring members of The
Noise Within theater company.
Race yourself
This wasn't just your average Artistic Director Meets
Theater Critic Group discussion. Sparks fly before
"Permanent Collection."
Show time
Now let us pray that we remember our monologues and
our katas. And may our classmates be kind. Plus, a visit
to Disney Concert Hall.
Green team
When last we saw Howie, he'd chucked
his career as a theater critic and joined
the Orange Star Dinner Show. And
thus our finale unfolds.
Counter
Act one
Whether it's Dori debating Robert
Brustein about Shakespeare or
Donald, J.D., Jay and Tim checking
out the beautiful people at the
Standard Hotel, the institute gets off to
a rousing start.
Crack epidemic
Sorry, but these are the rules: You
step on the crack, you break
Mom's back. Check out what
happens when theater critics take
an acting class.
Write wingers
What fun is doing a review if it isn't
due in two hours and you can't get your
Biltmore Internet connection to work?
But writing on deadline, then critiquing
the work in writing groups, turns out to
be an institute highlight.
Hedda the class
No, Karen isn't engaging in subversive shadow
puppetry: She's just goofing off, Orange
County-style. Check out Ben Cameron,
Gordon Davidson and J.D. in his South Coast
Repertory pose.
Exterior monologues
With one day before performance,
practice for our final acting
presentations reaches a fever pitch.
Either that, or Jenn has a lipstick issue.
