A year in New York:

The time finally came: I ran out of space on my website, so I was forced to consolidate the dozens of pages I'd devoted to my time in New York City. I'm left with two pages of assorted highlights and my cultural diary -- and I've kept my Finland/Russia pages for now.
Above, a wintry scene in front of Columbia's majestic Butler Library. Right, the restored hall at Ellis Island during a bitter-cold January visit. Below, Anya Grundmann does her Island Girl impression at my birthday party.
Top, Carole Carmichael leading the troops on a road trip to Philadelphia. Far left, Allan Jalon on the day of the big anti-war march. Left, the famous Flatiron Building. Above, an inflatable gorilla marks a labor protest on 96th Street.
With Carole and Josh at "Urinetown," one of my favorite musicals. Right, Danny and Staci visit from California.
A glorious spring day in the middle of Central Park, where I'd often walk on Sunday afternoons.
Clockwise from top: another scene from the anti-war march; I don a special Fairway freezer jacket to enter the "cold room"; Carole and Josh celebrate Halloween; a view of the Guggenheim Museum.
Clockwise from top: the Blizzard of '03; Susan Edmondson at Ellis Island; Carole's feet at the new Dia modern art museum; my day at "David Letterman"; John Scalzi gets friendly with Thomas Jefferson in front of the Journalism Building.
Top, my eagle-eyed view of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. Above, Anya in front of 16-story Butler Hall. Left, my little kitchen. Below, Josh checks out the view from the roof.
Above left, with Carole at the Bleecker Street subway stat?ion. Above, in front of the J-schoo. Left, Kaywin Feldman, visiting from Memphis, checks out a contemporary art gallery. Below, Kristin Tillotson taking a stroll on College Walk.
Above, Josh and Anya at the Cloisters. Left, Kristin, Sasha Frere-Jones and Elizabeth Kendall on a fall trip to Elizabeth's family cabin in Connecticut. Below, Kristin can't resist making out with George Washington.
