Tulare County, about an hour south of Fresno, is dairy country. And no one knows cows better than the generations of Portuguese immigrants -- most of them from the Azores Islands -- that have flocked here over the years. When Diana wrote a story about one of those farmers, Tony Morais, who owns a farm with 40 head of dairy cattle, he invited Diana and her friends to a Saturday afternoon of food, singing, plenty of cold beer and an evening of Portuguese barn dancing at his ranch. One of the highlights at the party, which attracted hundreds of people from the local Portuguese community, was the traditional "bull pull," where farmers pitted their prize specimens against each other to see which teams could pull the most weight. (In the top photo, Amante and Brilliant get affectionate with their master.) Afterward, some of the men took the contest to the next step: competing to see how much they could pull by themselves. |
